Ceiling fans, like portables, produce a cooling
effect by moving air across the surface of the skin. This effect makes
people feel cooler.
When to use fans
Run fans only when someone is there to appreciate
the cooling effect. During operation the fan motor generates heat energy,
and energy is wasted in the space around it.
Room placement
Ceiling fans are usually mounted in the center of
a room where the light fixture would normally go. For this reason, they
often contain their own lighting fixture just below the fan blades.
Note: It is important to locate the lighting
below the blades. Lights located above the blades will appear to flicker
psychedelically when the fan operates.

Reversible operation
Some ceiling fans offer reversible operation. The
benefit is that they can blow air down in summer when the breeze will
create a cooling effect and up in winter to circulate warm air that has
risen to the ceiling. This feature is particularly advantageous in rooms
where high ceilings trap warm air during the heating season.
